We are in the process of Starting to repair 4 old leaded Stained Glass windows for Tanana, Alaska for the St. James Episcopal Church. Please keep checking the site for more details and pictures soon to come. We will keep you posted on the progress soon.
The windows were originally hanging as panels in The Church of Our Savior at the Old Mission in Tanana. This church was built at the end of the 1800's. In 1905 a bell was bought by the village people at the Old Mission and the inscription on it was "Alleluyah for the Lord God Omnipotents reigneth". July 26th 1905 the four interior stained glass windows arrived, they are of Cathederal Glass and one is in memorial for Laura Evans the chiefs sister Laura Evan and the other our little Nana, Suzanette Prevost. When the people of the old mission began moving down into Tanana the windows somehow followed and were stored in the basement of the first church built there. Then a log church was constructed the windows fitted into window openings at the back and sides of the church. The weight of the logs causing them to shift and be squashed. The soft lead bowed and the glass began to pop. It was decided in 2004 that something has to be done and finally we contacted Expressions in Glass, Debbie Mathews. She came to Tanana and examined the windows and felt she could repair them. With help from various people we were able to crate them up and ship them into Fairbanks were they are now at her shop on Peger Road. They will be stored and glass replaced and new frames built by James Grant an artist from Tanana and will be placed in St. James Episcopal Church in Tanana again, but in a different format. They will be put in frames and bolted to the walll in front of the window openings and there we pray they will hang for another 100 years.
The information we have comes from letters written by Rev. Jules Prevost's wife Louise, The Rev. Helen Peters,Tanana., Alaska who was raised at the Old Mission and serves the Community of Tanana and St. James Episcopal Mission there.
